yeah, that was pretty ****. especially because it was narratively pointless: he didn't even figured it out due to her heritage, it was because she had coal on her arm. the line was just there to be racist. nothing in that storyline changes if you take out the bit that's insulting to millions of people in an already marginalized group.

Does it ever get like... worth picking back up? I mean from the perspective of someone with not a lot of time and really room for only one show that's a dedicated hatewatch. (That show being The Flash. Such terrible, terrible writing. My word.)

Eh. There's only so much boozing antihero that's worth your time.

Despite the racism in the evil voodoo priest trope, the episode where the dead are coming back was actually where I felt like I liked the writing more. If nothing else, it was nice to see the different little ghost stories, like the kuchisake-onna. But it doesn't ever get better than, say, Supernatural at its best.

Shame to hear Constantine's a let down. I don't know much about the comics but I know enough to hold them in high regard. I liked the movie too, although that kind of strayed from the source material somewhat.

I mean, other people may like it more. The guy who sent me anon messages (while I was going back and forth with him, so not subtle) certainly did. This grim antihero stuff just doesn't do it for me since I was a teenager.

I will say, though, as a musician, Constantine has an amazing intro theme. all harpsichords n' ****. awesome.

Yeah maybe I should just tune in to watch the intro, then stop watching.

I watch it simply because I love the Constantine character and comics so whatever. It's pretty reaching to call that stuff racism anyway. And supernatural was boring.

I'm just in it for the ride I guess, like most shows I watch it's not for the writing, it's to feel junk.

the climactic speech of the second episode was, in effect, "at first I had no idea what was going on but then I remembered that all gypsies are evil devil people." that's not reaching, that's racist.

I do understand that, in America, our racial politics don't really involve the Romani enough for that to seem like a huge issue, but they are a legit oppressed class in large swaths of Europe.

not all Brits are racist. there are plenty of ways to make your lead look like a self-centered jerk without making them attack marginalized groups for no reason. for example, look at most of the rest of the episodes.

I'm more saying he's from Europe so he'd know more about gypsy oppression. Or something. Depicting racism isn't bad, just supporting it.

depicting racism, in your hero, as the tool they used to solve the mystery, is supporting it. imagine a cop show where the detective solves the case by assuming the first black person they see did it, then being right.

I agree that depicting prejudices or the like is not inherently wrong, but the problem is there is no sense of 'oh Constantine is wrong here' with the anti-rom statement specifically. It cannot be taken at face-value that the things he says are morally wrong in general because, as the protagonist, he is also right often and people in the show get into trouble because they don't listen to him and he's shown to be moral and self-sacrificing often. As Keeper said, the line was pointless except to be like 'gypsy = bad' and then show that actually, yeah, what Constantine said is right because this woman is killing people with monsters. (Edit: razor just said this last part)

Compare to when Papa Midnite rebukes Constantine as a magpie, stealing bits from others' magical traditions for his shenanigans, which was actually a good moment except it didn't get follow-through.

Well whatever, still a fun show.

Honestly I almost am more angry at how the """villain""" in that episode was killed? Given that she was literally dragged to hell by a husband that she killed because he was an abusive monster??? I actually totally forgot about that until I started thinking about the context of the racism.

Basically screw that show.
