Indeed, update frequency is a viable criteria for judging a webcomic. Between two comics, equal in every other way, I will always take the one that updates more frequently. I have lost count of the good web comics I've given up on and forgotten because they updated too infrequently.
Quantity is not necessarily opposed to quality. Many great comics update frequently (El Goonish Shive, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal), and others have their installments handed out in dribbles (City of Reality, Dresden Codak). Schedule slip is sometimes inevitable, but it can be handled with grace- that's another component to updates. For example, between each chapter Unsounded takes a long hiatus, but this is announced ahead of time and a date is posted for the comics return. Other comics just promise an "update soon" and go dead for months. You check in every week for a while, then every month, then the comic slips off your radar entirely.
True, you can't demand an author to update more often, but they can't demand that you continue reading after periods of inactivity. Valuing regular updates isn't an indictment of the author.

All good points, though I would be hard pressed to quantify the qualities of a comic; or to put another way, it would be very difficult to find two comics closely comparable enough to declare them "equal in most ways."

To make such a comparison, I would have to create a sort of "aesthetics of experience" or "of reading," to quantify your reasons for reading. In such a list, it would be easier to categorize and compare the webcomics which you enjoy and those which failed to capture your interest.

In my such a list, a frequent update schedule would be a near non-entity, since that is not what attracts me to content.

Oh, something I was reminded about while reading through Paranatural (good one, btw, check it out) was Romantically Apocalyptic. I remember coming across it years ago on DeviantArt, but DA is not fun on dial-up, so I never explored it. Anyone around here familiar with it? I honestly don't remember much about it at all.

Okay, very shortly I am going to start reading Paradox Space because it's been plugged by Homestuck's creator and possibly features a similar world/circumstance, and I also intend to start what looks to be a beautifully drawn webcomic that goes by Stand Still. Stay Silent., but seeing as I've started neither and don't actually know what either is about yet, I'm mostly just bumping this for now and will be back with links and images once I actually get into them. Been busy lately.

So far Plox is good. I enjoy Steve's coloring from other comics so I decided to check it out.

Even when I don't find them that funny, things like this make this comic very entertaining.

Actually, I think that's Pokémon she's talking about.

*looks at the above comic*

*words words words words word*

...T-the punch line happens at some point right? Did I just miss the joke entirely? Was it the fact that people leave the door open when pooping? 'Cause that was entirely too much build-up for that pay-off.

Yeah that does appear to be Pokemon...

...it also appears to be several panels of tournament rules handed out in a condescending and bitchy manner only to get to the anticlimactic last panel which makes a vague half attempt at a "TCG players are slobs" ....um... 'joke'

No. That is actually mtg. They've even had the bad terra stomper / llanowar elves / forests rip offs.

It's an offbrand "please don't sue me" MTG substitute.
From the author commentary in the comic after this one:
"One might be wondering why Sarah and Tedd are separated, and the answer is simple: Even when all that's happening is the distribution of packs, players are told where to sit.

I posted yesterday's comic knowing full well that someone somewhere would accuse me of explaining more than was necessary about the rules of the tournament and that I would have to put up with it for at least twenty-four hours before the comic itself could make it apparent that the rules themselves weren't the point.

Okay, some of what Justin said is good to know, such as being able to keep playing if one loses a round, and I did want to poke some fun at real stuff that happens at tournaments, AND I didn't receive any of the complaints about Justin going over the rules that I expected to get, BUT STILL!"

Man I've got to post some more webcomic recommendations.

Magic uses land cards, not energy.

Exactly why I thought Pokemon ... and I'm assuming why others did as well.

The ripoffs that Mjack33 mentioned are not in the panel he linked hence why no one else jumped to that conclusion I bet. From single linked strip it very much just looks like some androgynous character blathering on about rules to a Pokemon tourney and for some reason being extremely condescending about the whole thing. Maybe thats why I didn't find it funny...

Unless there's some serious character development portrayed, or some gold mine of an in-reference, I don't think that knowing the context adds a whole lot.

This will make it a clearer parody. Or at least attempt to.

So, you know when somebody isn't funny but tries to be funny? That's what that webcomic is. Some of the worst, forced jokes they could make.

So, anybody got another webcomic to suggest?
