this is a space for legitimate debate on the serious subject of poverty.

Yes...now to make 500 pointless threads and random postings so that my post count will be over 9000!

Poverty is good and I resent having to care for people who aren't worthy of having a job.

its bad
Yeah

it could be mitigated by:
Of course it can be mitigated. I don't think it can be completely eliminated, though, and I said that to Rag and he made this thread for some reason.
-free university education for all citizens
All for this. People shouldn't start off their working careers shouldering a giant debt.
-desegregating cities to break up slums
Sure.
-increased minimum wage
Yeah, it's pretty low right now if you look at inflation adjusted dollars. Sure eventually inflation will make it catch back up, but that doesn't mean you can just give up and force terrible living conditions on the working poor.
-eliminating regressive taxes like sales tax and increasing taxes on wealthy americans and increasing the estate tax / luxury tax
Yeah, I mostly dislike sales tax, but it's probably unfeasible to completely eliminate it because of the way those taxes are tied to those things and because it's the only way to tax tourists. It sucks, but I'd rather make it low than completely eliminate it.
-expanding food stamps and social security
As long as the food stamps/financial aid are going to people who can't work/want to work, but can't get hired/are too young or old to work, I'm all for it. It's only excessive spending for people who are able bodied and refuse to try to find work that I am opposed to (and even then, I don't want them to starve, I just don't want their lifestyle to be comfortable if they refuse to try to contribute to society). I'm all for offering workfare more than anything.
-criminal justice reform, some drug decriminalization
All for it.
-government investment in jobs programs, jobs for young americans
Yup.
-other things too
Sure.

I'm against Hillary winning the nomination.

It's not that I necessarily disagree or agree with anyone's platform. I just don't like how Hillary specifically has behaved in the past when it comes to certain political practices and events, and I would rather the nomination go to someone else. It's why I'm equally against Jeb Bush and Chris Christie for their party's nomination. I would rather both parties nominated people where the other side doesn't have the ground to stand on when it comes to mudslinging.

I think he would be a better candidate?

I don't necessarily agree with him either, but I trust him more and I feel like he is taking at least SOME positions because he believes in them and not because of some political calculus.

On a side note, Bernie Sanders petiioned the democratic party committee for one of my favorite ideas ever for an election year. He wants to get republicans and democrats to debate each other in the primary process.

Why does America have the world's highest incarceration rate?

you keep asking questions you could answer with google. according to this DOJ report, about 16% of inmates in state prisons are there for drug-related offenses. more important are the racial numbers: about 79 thousand black people are in state prisons for drug-related offenses, compared to about 65 thousand white people. considering that, in the 2010 census, about 223 million people identified as white while only 39 million identified as black, those incarceration numbers start to look pretty racist. about one in every 3500 white people in America is currently in a state prison for drug-related crimes, while roughly one in every 500 black people is.

also, about 56% of people incarcerated in federal prisons are there for drug-related crimes. the report doesn't break those down by race but it seems likely that the same trend holds.
