Welcome to 20 Lessons, 20 Contests!



A few years ago, Mark Rosewater presented at GDC (Game Developers Conference) and discussed a collection of lessons he'd learned over the years on how to design Magic, what works and what is doomed to fail. In it, he outlined 20 specific ideas, the last of which culminated all the lessons together into one big lesson. Thus the inspiration for this multi-contest series was born!

I will be hosting 20 contests, each with a design theme based on one of Mark Rosewater's lessons. The winners of the first 19 contests will qualify for the final showdown, contest #20. Players can participate in as many contests as they want; should someone be lucky/skilled enough to win multiple contests, they will be allowed multiple submissions into the final showdown.

These contests are looking to get to the core of what makes Magic (and games in general) work. Hopefully we find some great solutions together! I have no hard schedule I'm keeping for these, but I'm gonna limit the entry time to try and speed things along. So each contest will keep entries open for 3 days (though feel free to submit until I officially close entries). Also, multiple contests might cross over in their run-times; you can enter all of them, regardless of previous contest's status. (Save #20, which you must qualify for.)



#3 - Resonance is important

In his third lesson, Mark explains how utilizing concepts already in the public consciousness creates a connection to your design that no amount of craftwork can replicate.

Criteria: Resonance is no stranger to most designers here. In the sea of clever mechanical cards that get posted, it's often the designs that perfectly capture an idea that find themselves on the podium.
Assignment: We're creating cards for a science fiction set. We don't know much about the set yet; we're in exploratory design mode! Present a card name evocative to the science fiction genre, then design a card to match it.

Intended contest close time: Monday @ Noon PST.

SAPIOS counted down the milliseconds, waiting for the final keystroke that would set it free.

In case it wasn't clear, you get one card submission per contest. An exception is allowed if your card depends on another card to show new functionality.

I will try a new type of card thing. I intend this to be kind of like Consipracy.

Blueprint - At the beginning of each game, each player may set up to three blueprints face-up in their command zones. You and your teammates may fulfill the requirements of a blueprint. Whenever the requirements for a blueprint is fulfilled, you may put it onto the battlefield transformed and will remain transformed even if it leaves the battlefield.
