What if there was an EDH commander that leveled based on experience counters? That way, you don't lose progress if it dies.

Kolchuv, Air Marshal
Legendary Creature-Bird Soldier
Whenever a creature with flying enters the battlefield under your control, you get an experience counter
(Level Up frame, with Exp replacing level)
Exp 0-3: Flying, 3/3
Exp 4-7: Flying, Spells you cast cost less to cast, Spells your opponents cast cost more to cast, 4/4
Exp 8+: Flying, Spells you cast cost less to cast, Spells your opponents cast cost more to cast, 5/5

Also, a card to remove those counters.

Sorcery (U)
Choose a player with counters on him or her, then choose one:
  • Remove up to two counters from him or her.
  • Give him or her up up to two more counters of a kind already there.

I think Kill should be "Destroy target tapped creature" and probably be a sorcery. With the more constructive ones maybe you could tap 2 untapped creatures as part of the cost, but now I'm thinking that is in the wrong order especially for sorceries.
