I've complained in another context about planeswalkers being too powerful for optimal storyspace.

The previous nerf of planeswalker lore (Time Spiral Block) served to make them acceptable cards, but did not put them in optimal storyspace.

I'm hoping that whatever transpires here knocks the Spark down a peg.

After the complaints I've read on the net for the new-walkers being too wimpy? I might be grossly wrong, but I doubt that. The Spark, afaik, it's almost uninfluential in matters of power level: it gives 'walkers the edge by letting them tap mana from other planes, ok, but planebound casters of superior mastery should still pound them to the ground. That Jace is a prodigy in one of the most story-killing powers that can exist is another matter IMO, that's a problem of the character rather than the Spark. Liliana is very powerful because she's what, 90 years of experience on steroids poured into a 20-something body? Again, not a Spark problem. I don't find the rest of the recurring Gatewatch particularly problematic.

Now, if they killed off most of the crazy powerful 'walkers...

My main concern with WotS is how they will sell Bolas as suitably intelligent while avoiding him killing off/enslaving all the cast. This is supposed to be his master plan, his display of ultimate genius and power. A weak resolution would harm both the character and the writers' credibility in making supposedly genius characters.

I can at least attest to the fact that Greg Weissman knows how to write a genius.
The man is responsible for Xanatos after all.

I fully expect, once Bolas collects all the infinity mox and snaps his claws, half the Walkers will vanish.

Who wants to put odds on the most likely victims?

Anyone that is difficult to write for, or are generally unliked based on whatever polls they take. Possibly eliminating people based on race so they cast is more diverse

There's a rule that planeswalkers can't planeswalk carrying other living organisms with them, but the new art shows Huatli with an Ixalan raptor, Sarkhan with (possibly non-Ravnican) dragons, and Jiang with his dog. Is this just artistic licence or will an upcoming lore change allow characters to planeswalk with animals?

Jiang is able to planeswalker with his dog. That’s part of his planeswalking ability. Huatli and Sarkhan are summoning creatures like you or I do in the game.

For any who may be wondering?

I'm calling it now; the dog is the actual walker.

I said it as a joke but that would actually be really cool. Maybe he lacks the intellect to planeswalk himself so he needs to hand over the reins of his power to another creature he has a close bond with?

If that's the case they should make him blind in this battle so the dog can be his seeing eye dog.

There is a new art with the announcement of the panel at PAX East. It shows golden lights coming up out of the Izzet structure from Steam Vents and coming down on Ajani, Jace, Giden, and possibly Liliana, or going in the other direction.

They seem to be cheering, so I'm guessing that's not Bolas' Spark Devouring Device (Speculated Element) at work. It might be a device of that description in reverse, though.

Hold on, is this going to be an actual book for a damn change and not an e-book?

https://vorthosjay.tumblr.com/post/183542617921/storytelling-in-magic-the-gathering-panel-at-ecccA report from someone who was at the ECCC Magic Panel:[/url]

Storytelling in Magic: the Gathering Panel at ECCC 2019
Yesterday was hectic, so I’m only sitting down now to give the cliff notes on yesterday’s panel! It was a lot of fun, and some cool information was revealed. The panel was moderated by Del Ray’s Editorial Director, Tricia Narwani (far left), and featured (from left to right) Django Wexler, Greg Weisman, Nic Kelman, Me(!), and Steve Sunu. Thank you Jim Casale for Live Tweeting it, I’m following Jim’s tweets here to remind me what was said. Check out Jim’s thread for more images.

The first reveal was in the panelist introductions, Django Wexler is writing a 20 chapter prequel ‘novel’ available through the Del Ray website - Sign-up for Random House’s Newsletter to get access. Django’s stories will feature Ral Zarek, Vraska, Kaya, Niv-Mizzet, and Lavinia, and is set during the time period the Gatewatch is away from Ravnica. Django’s stories will feature his new original character Hekara, a cheerful Rakdos emissary.

There was a lot of discussion about Ravnica and Magic storytelling in general, and I was very funny, but I think the revelations about the story are what people want. Here’s some more on Ravnica: War of the Spark, Greg Weisman’s novel.

Teyo Verada is 17-years-old and has only recently become a planeswalker. He’s the ‘new reader’ POV character for the book (one of many POV characters), and his first planeswalk is to Ravnica during Ravnica: War of the Spark, so he doesn’t known anything about the multiverse or Ravnica. He was originally going to be mid-to-late 20s, but he was aged down to fit the direction Greg Weisman wanted to take his character.

Teyo is from a plane called Gobakhan, where civilization lives between two huge storms known as the Eastern and Western Cloud. Teyo is an acolyte in the Order of the Shieldmage, which protects towns from diamondstorms. He’s also the worst acolyte in the order.

Teyo’s tour guide on Ravnica is Rat, Greg’s new original character. Rat is a 16-year-old girl (real name Araithia Shokta) who is torn between joining the Selesnyan, Gruul, and Rakdos guilds. Magali Villeneuve, who did the cover for Ravnica: War of the Spark, also did character art for Rat.

Greg and Django have collaborated on plot beats between the stories, and Greg liked Hekara so much, he made Rat and Hekara friends.

Greg’s second novel to will feature Teyo, Rat, Kaya, and Liliana as main characters, with Jace, Ral Zarek, and Vraska.

Those are all the major news bits, once I find a recording of the panel I’ll share it.
