This seems more like a gimmick to drum up interest and involvement to me.

But really, is that a bad thing?

Oh, there's nothing inherently wrong with it, and I'm not personally opposed to the idea. I just mean that ultimately, I doubt this plot point is going to matter in the long run.

Oh, definitely not. It would affect a return to Ixalan, should that ever happen, but they're definitely only doing this because they know it will be barely a blip as far as the overall plan is concerned.

I want the merfolk to have it. I hate the pirates, the empire has shown it cannot do anything other than misuse the sun and the vampires getting it would probably not result in what they want to accomplish because we can't get rid of them.

Note that merfolk winning most likely means Kumena's faction wins

I'm guessing whoever wins will be set up as the bad guys in Return to Ixalan

I doubt it.

If the vampires win, they'll be the villains in RtI, just like they've been intermittently painted now.
If the Pirates win, they won't exactly be the villains, they'll pry up the city brick by brick and leave devastation in their wake. RtI will still see their victory as negative, but the individuals will mostly get away
If the merfolk win, heck, I don't know. Could go either way, ascendant as villains or as Sun Empire, below.
If the Sun Empire wins, RtI will show them as the picked-on victims, surrounded by enemies with their backs up against the wall in Orazca.

Even if this doesn't end up having a direct impact on future MTG plots, it might impact how creative approaches stroytelling.

Outside of Kumena, isn't that what they want? To keep it out of the hands of everyone?

I don't think they would count the Immortal Sun leaving the plane because it fell into the hands of an outsider as a win condition. But maybe?

At that point it's somebody else's problem, so that's sort of a win. It wouldn't be affecting anybody on Ixalan at least.

I know that, with the art book out, we are edging ever closer to the next Plane-shift, mixing up some more D&D and Magic goodness together. I found out that there was an actual adventure put out for people to preview during PAX Unplugged.

Here's the review someone wrote.

I am liking the MTG D&D thing. Some aspects of the setting feel like they could be their own D20 product, but not D&D. The actual settings however, are prime for porting.

Spoilers are out. Kumena is thankfully , though it seems there are no mono- legend merfolk then.

Agreed.
The Azor part is especially galling.

I preferred my plot where the dinosaurs were mindcontrolling the Sun Empire and various merfolks, ending with the vampires being the incidental saviors of Ixalan.

Unlike Ixalan's Azor plot, mine was made up on the pot, so if its a crock of ****, you see why. :V

I was trying to figure out who Kinjalli and Tilonalli are...legendary dinosaurs?

Aspects of the sun. The former is to blame for the Sun Empire and the latter is associated with anger and love.
