Looks like we got Edgar Markov for vampires, Mirri for cats, and Wasitora, O-Kagachi, and the Ur-Dragon for dragons.

I'm assuming that a new version of Mirri. We did have a card for her before didn't we?

Technically three different cards.

Her new card is looking pretty great. I like that they keep some of the basic elements of her mechanical design. I'm not so sure on the art, though... it doesn't really look like Mirri; her fur is the wrong color and to make recognition even worse her outfit seems totally unrelated (I am fully aware characters can change clothes, but visual attributes are important to character recognition across multiple artists). Her face also seems a little off but that might just be the fur color and it's not as divergent as RKF's version.

Two words: Hungry Lynx

That Mirri card has a pretty cool design, and it's even playable in Tiny Leaders (Yes, Tiny Leaders. Shut up).
I'm on the fence about the flavour, though. Why did they just randomly give Mirri a new card, and why is she :g::w: now? Not that her old card was particularly exciting, but it strikes me as odd. And I have to agree about the art. It's not terrible, but it doesn't really scream 'Mirri' to me. Her face looks a bit like a dog's...

I really love that they put so many potential commanders into those decks these days. They did a good job with the synergies, too, there's a pretty nice equipment sub-theme coming together for that tribe.

Nazahn looks like he's from Alara.

She's because she's Dueling Grounds with a body. Also it lets her be an alternate commander for the cats.

EDIT: Also probably because of the First Strike (which has mostly moved away from Green).

Mechanically speaking, sure. But why pick Mirri? Are they going to print a :w::r: Gerrard at some point just for the lulz, too?

There aren't that many other famous MTG Catfolk that are mostly green for the cat deck. I mean, I guess they could have made another new character whole-cloth, but they already did that with most of the other legends. I mean, their choices were basically Mirri or Jedit.

There's a lot of Alaran choices.
Mentioning Jedit, that also opens up Jaeger.

They were probably aiming for a few deep dives into historical characters. Alara probably doesn't go back far enough for that.

I've also seen people suggest a :g::w: card for Raksha to represent the time when he was exiled and lived in the Tangle.

Well, in that case I really DO hope we'll get a new Baron Sengir card. The fact that the cat deck has so many new legends got my hopes up a bit. The Baron deserves a card that's at least playable, and they'd better not ruin him by tacking on a random colour (not that I have much of a problem with the new Mirri).

I think the reason we have a high exposure of legends is the dragon deck's 5 color nature.
I'm expecting to see a LOOOOT of legends there.

Are Balan and Nazahn (two legendary leonin revealed today) new characters? I didn't find any results on the MTGS wiki, but I figure if they're really obscure, someone here would know.

They're new characters.
It appears they are from the Nacatl that moved into Bant, meaning the only place they might have appeared is in some instance post-conflux, but the only featured story we've had since about Alara was Kaalia's origin.
There were some Sunstrikers featured in that, but it seems highly improbable there's any relation.

Here's some O-Kagachi art.

Spoiler

EDIT: Also a fun story about how we got Wasitora.

Spoiler

I love how all the snake heads of O-Kagachi look intent and intense, except for the one furthest forward, who's just sort of looking back at the dragon head with this expression of "Oh, boy, this is gonna be fun, right guys? Guys?"

I really dislike the art on Wasitora, just because that is not at all how I've always pictured her, but ultimately, I'm glad she's getting a card.

I always saw her as fluffier.

I saw her as more... sinuous, you might say, with a longer body and generally less panther-like. And without the gold jewellery. Still, I'm really, really happy to get the card, and she's exactly the right colours.

And apparently the reason we get more new cards per deck is that it's only four decks but with the same total number of new cards as before. Sounds fair. It's a pity they're switching to the four deck model when they haven't done a cycle of ally coloured decks yet, though. That would have been a great opportunity for more planeswalker commanders (I'm thinking of uncarded old characters), and they could have printed a new ally coloured Partner commander per deck to complement those from C16. So many incomplete patterns... :twitch:

Edit: Oh, and it looks like Kindred Discovery has merfolk with fishtails on it. Very nice nod to the old school merpeople (that I hope to see on Dominaria). I approve.

Some responses to MaRo's cat-mander 2017 article: (http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/ar ... 2017-08-07)

1. Weren't cards like Desert Nomads and Camel the first to refer to a specific card (before desert was a subtype)?

2. Mirrodin block also had the white-token-cat-generating superstar White Sun's Zenith.

3. Mirri the Cursed wasn't vampire-cursed by Crovax, she was cursed *instead* of Crovax because she killed Selenia: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/ar ... 2007-01-25

4. Ajani may be the first and only cat planeswalker appearing on a planeswalker card, but he's not the first or only cat planeswalker: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/ ... seid=25889

5. Black Cat, being a Zombie, is not a "normal, living house cat".

And that's it!

While we're at it...

6. Purraj of Urborg wasn't the first cat person to show up in the story, that was Jedit Ojanen. He was the protagonist of two comics after all.
