Take Donald Trump. Make him an actually competent billionaire who is significantly less predictable on any particular issue. Remove some of the bad character traits but enhance some of the others and give him some sense of subtlety and patience. Oh and make him healthier so he’ll probably actually live at least four more years. That’s basically the worst potential outcome of electing Bloomberg; and it’s not that far out there given some of the stuff coming out about him. The best case is he would be completely untrustworthy on any issue in the election and we’d basically be rolling the dice.

Trump is a known evil. Bloomberg is a game of Russian Roulette where you don’t know how many chambers are loaded. I’ll take the known evil slowly slipping into dementia and heart disease.

Edit: he is also trying ti buy the presidency. That’s unacceptable. He should have joined earlier.

Funny thing about that too is a 1%er in global terms is someone who makes 32K annually. So like school teachers are 1%ers in global terms. Even in American terms, 1%er is someone who makes 422K annually. Way more than I make, but not quite the Scrooge McDuck caricature.

I think focus on wealth inequality is important, and necessary for social cohesion to not let it get out of control (it will always exist to some degree, Pareto distribution is like a force of nature - but if not kept in check it leads to violent revolutions). But the language of 1% in American politics is super dumb imo

The presidency is SUPPOSED to be bought nowadays. That’s how the laws work, citizens united and such

Bloomberg is the first example of a Republican billionaire trying to fund his way into outright purchasing the Democratic nomination. He will also have to get it via a mixture of fearmongering and a contested convention.

It’s partially a matter of scale and blatancy.

DJ if Sanders wins and you are not voting for him you are no better that the supporters you hate, that would make you a passive accomplice of Trump in my book.

I have voted everytime I could since I'm 18, I have never got to vote for my cup of tea in a presidential election.

What is Sanders saying about the 1%?

Look up every negative noun and adjective and he has said it. It’s like a movement. At last Warren does it in a fair way

Sanders wants to break the wheel and these things are very chaotic

As long as you guys vote, I’m not judging. If you don’t vote tho, I don’t want to hear a word

Not sure how elections work across the pond - do you guys have a spending limit in a election like we do? IIRC over here individual candidates can spend around 20k in the run up to an election, and the party's themselves have a limit as well on any national campaigns.

Either way, the concept of a Billionaire being able to run for office doesn't sit right for me for some reason

This is such a weaselly take. It bugs me a great deal when people say that. And it’s usually partisans trying to boost their own interests by guilting you into supporting their side.

I believe a person is obligated to vote their conscience. You can spin that right back around and say people not voting their conscience for 3rd party candidates are passive accomplices for the 2 party system we’re stuck in that a good number of Americans complain about, having to choose between turd sandwiches or poo-burgers every election cycle.

I mean if you are participating in a primary... and then refuse to acknowledge the winner is kinda BS to me, but I get the point and I think I was being judgemental on that one, just vote for whomever you want but vote like Barns said.

And I agree on the second point, over here presidency is won by 50+ votes but lots of candidates run for it, meaning no one gets the 50%+ votes so then the 2 most voted candidates go into the second round and then is poo burger or turd sandwiches.
The coalition that was in power -Concertación- kinda like the Democrats over there remained in power for 20 years due to this, now we finally got a 3rd force... but we are changing the constitution next year so lots of things are going to be changing over here.

No limits on spending (effectively. You do have to agree to limits if you accept public financing option, but candidates can raise way more if they don’t accept that option and go private funding instead). Candidates can spend as much as they like of their own funds - which is really being highlighted this year with 3 billionaires in the running currently.

There are limits on contributions, but Citizens United ruling gave a work around to individual contribution limits, allowing groups to raise unlimited funding - creating Super PACs

A majority of Americans support (bipartisan support) spending limits and dislike the effect of money in politics, so I expect campaign finance reform to occur at some point.

Thanks MJack... Whether I agree or not, at least I get where you are coming from.

@rest of discussion: I'll vote if and only if there's a candidate that I want to vote FOR. I'll certainly participate in the local elections when the main election is going on, but if neither major party puts a decent candidate forward I'll either vote 3rd party, or write my own name in, or leave it blank, lol.

This is not new, btw. I voted for Clinton, but I did NOT vote for Al Gore. Then I voted for Kerry and Obama, and then didn't vote for Clinton. We'll see how things go this time. /shrug

A non-vote is also a vote (of sorts): I feel terrible for my conservative friends who voted FOR Trump, and have to live with that decision FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. I'm sure many of them don't think putting a 'Republican' in the White House was worth it, and if they do, good for them.

edit: Actually, I wish that was a real option in American politics: if enough people vote against both candidates, both parties have to field new ones. lol. That would probably always get my vote.

Lmao, I just tuned in to Dem debate (missed most but trying to catch closing remarks) and literally the moment my feed starts Biden is handed the mic and immediately some people in the crowd start yelling something I can’t make out but prevented Biden from talking until the yellers were escorted out. These people are all in the same party and folks can’t keep their adult pants on. What an absolute **** show. Trumps victory straight up broke some peoples minds

A bus full of people crashes. Nobody is wearing a seat belt and none of them get seriously injured. And then you go and ask them why they aren't wearing a seat belt. I'm sure they got a good laugh out of that one. I think the answer is in the question regarding this one.

Yeah, the only correct response to being extremely lucky is to assume that's the norm, that's why skydivers don't bother with a parachute anymore cause that one lady survived falling out of a plane![/quote]

LOL @ You and barney and everyone that thumbed up your post.

Trying to compare a bus accident at 30 mph to skydiving without a parachute! That's cute

Everyone heckles Biden at this point. The guys a joke. Hes like that cool uncle that you had as a kid. You grow up and realize hes just a jerk who doesnt know ****. He just rambles on and on and on, and gets irrationally irate at people who question him.

Idk if anyone knows who they were there for yet. Bernie just had some people jump on stage and take his mic at an event day or two ago. It’s chaos man

Meh. Let’s talk about games...

Anyone else play KSP? I didn’t really know about the game, found out about it a few months ago, and I fell in love. Not the longest play time ever for me, or even close, but such a cool game all the same.

This looks like a regular debate to me...
Basically put all candidates in a **** pool have them trow **** at each other then whomever has less **** wins, and all the others supports him.

They all start with manners but as the race gets close the **** starts to fly.
