I must say, I'm curious.

There's a movie from 1998 called Holy Man starting Jeff Goldblum and Eddie Murphy.
It's widely panned and was a box office bomb. Eddie Murphy has openly bashed it twice in interviews.

But honestly, I genuinely like it.

I'm not a big cinephile, but I think I never heard of it.

I recently realized that Tamiyo stole Elphimas' title :(

Sorry for kind of disappearing instead of elaborating there for a week or so.

I went out to Seattle for a convention last weekend. It was a fairly good weekend, apart from my body doing its best to protest against the air. I even met some authors I've been fans of for some time, including a mutual friend of the good Mr. ShadowOfCygnus.

I flew back on Monday, which of course was basically the entire day. I went back to work on Tuesday, where I found that my managers had emailed me on the day that I left that they wanted me to go an extra 30 miles out of my way -- an hour and a half extra when considering traffic -- to go to one of their other offices on Wednesday instead of the normal downtown office where I work full-time. So, instead of 5 days of advanced notice, I had 1 day, the same day which I was going to refill my refrigerator and get some things to cook for the rest of the week.

I hope you understand why this left me a little miffed.

This isn't what was responsible for my last post, though. That was because, the week prior, my managers were wanting me to take that extra hour+ drive after work had already started in the morning, with no prior warning so that I could, for instance, make sure I had a full tank of gas or that my phone was charged to use the GPS, while we had an absolutely full work day and my co-worker was already scheduled to leave early AND a student had been put with us to shadow us for the day, as well as some other things besides that would require more explanation than I'm willing to sit down and type out right now. This is after I had brought up that this needed to be planned out. Very few things in life have left me legitimately pissed, but that was one of them.

To top it off, somehow I come back to a four-day work week that has been more heavy and exhausting than usual. Tuesday was a fairly normal 100-patient day while I was recovering from slight jet-lag and post-flight soreness as well as silently fuming and anxiously planning the next day's odd schedule. Wednesday was spent at an entirely different office that I had never been to before, working mostly with doctors I hadn't before. It wasn't all that bad because it's a small office and didn't have anywhere close to the patient load I do on a daily basis, and I spent most of the day commiserating with the other X-ray tech there. However, despite the company having paid to build that building, it was some of the shoddiest work I'd ever seen and was told horror stories of how it was even worse when they first moved in. As some examples, the strikeplates (I had to look up the term, so I thought I'd link it for anyone else unfamiliar with the word) on all 24 patient rooms had been forced in so badly that it left jagged bits of metal poking outwards that snagged several employee's and patient's shirts/sweaters and even caused one employee to bleed, and the parking garage entrance on the third floor didn't have an auto-door-opener for wheelchairs (and keep in mind this is an orthopedic office so a lot of people are coming in for foot/knee/spine/etc. and cannot walk well). These had to be brought up by the doctors/employees working there because somehow, after it failed some sort of inspection the first time and moving into the office had to be postponed for two weeks because they physically were not allowed in the building, these things didn't constitute enough of a safety/regulatory violation that they were needed to be installed beforehand. I actually sent an email to my managers the next day because I don't believe the elevators were up to code -- I recently learned that the Americans with Disabilities Act requires elevators to have both an auditory and visual signal when they arrived, but those damn things were silent.

Thursday somehow turned out even worse, because we had to cover more scheduled patients than I'd ever seen -- 130 when the average is about 110. I even went out during lunchtime to grab a Starbucks coffee because I haven't had a decent night's sleep since I got back and was too tired to tackle the rest of the day without it. Thankfully nothing catastrophic happened that day. I thought I was going to get a reprieve today, because Memorial Day on Monday makes it a holiday weekend and half the doctors took today off so that they can take extra long days, but not the doctor whom I cover on Fridays. He had a full day today, which meant it was an extremely light day for the other four of us, but not me. This isn't helped by the fact that I haven't slept well since I got back, so I've been getting progressively more tired as the week wraps up.

So, to recap:
Thursday: Flew to Seattle.
Friday-Sunday: Convention.
Monday: Flew back home to Dallas.
Tuesday: Have a full day, learn I have to take an extra 3 hours out of my day tomorrow. Go to bed early.
Wednesday: Wake up an extra hour early, not even dawn yet, to drive an hour and a half to another office. Drive another two hours back home at the end of the day. Go to bed spent.
Thursday: Have a fuller than full day. Go to bed exhausted.
Friday: Have a full day while the others have an easy day. Finally do some grocery shopping. Come here to tell you all.

This is my current frustration as well. My phone & internet company just seems to hate my money.

Cara Holis, an anti-necromancy specialist with a painful past. She's more of a warrior/traditional exorcist compared to the assassin Kaya, but their powers and goals (at least before Kaya joins the Gatewatch?) are very much aligned. The fact their names sound similar doesn't help either.

@Luna: Ouch! I hope things pick up. It sounds like those strikeplates could probably be an OHSA violation, and nobody wants to tangle with OHSA.

~~~
For years now I've been babbling this that and the other thing about my writing, about putting together a book and really getting it on the market. I've used it as excuse after excuse for not making progress on my ongoing storylines here. Some of you have even read it, and provided feedback for which I am very grateful.
As of right now I'm proud to announce that it's finally a thing. A real thing. The ebook is live on Amazon. A paperback edition should go through in the next few days, but the Kindle edition is real now. I'm probably as surprised as you are, I think this still felt like pie-in-the-sky until something like Thursday night, and since then it's been a rather frantic bit of work to get everything in order. And now it's here. I'm a (self) published author.
Hope you're all having a great weekend!
Congratulations, Tevish! That's really something to be proud of. I'm in the process of trying to give you my money, but Amazon is making it a bit more complicated than it should be. Rest assured, though, I will be buying the kindle version as soon as I can (although in the interest of full disclosure, I have no idea when I'll actually get to reading it... :doh:)
Anyway, congratulations!
As a follow-up to this, after half a day of waiting, Amazon has finally decided to let me give you money, so congratulations!
:D
(And for the record, the problem was that I had an expired card set to my 1-click purchase thing, and they wouldn't let me change it, so it didn't have anything to do with your book.)
At the risk of ruining whatever "street cred" I have around here, I was coming at this from the opposite angle and was going to ask "Who's Kaya?"
@Luna: Ouch! I hope things pick up. It sounds like those strikeplates could probably be an OHSA violation, and nobody wants to tangle with OHSA.
Those were fixed before I got there. I am going to keep on my managers about the elevators possibly not being up to code, though.
Ooh, cool. I'm a little biased against Amazon for being one of those brutal corporations, but I'll send my money your way soon. I've got a lot on my plate now, so while I have plenty of funds, my time and ability to keep track of everything is quite diminished.
EDIT: Oh, that cover art is gorgeous. Also, ugh, it looks like Amazon is telling me I can only read it if I download their proprietary app...
With the hope that the index page has not steered me wrong, happy birthday, Huey!
Oh, hey, I'm actually on time to wish someone a happy birthday for once. Happy birthday, Huey! Long may you reign!
Congratz, Tevish! The cover art is indeed amazing, btw.
Thank you all for the birthday wishes! :)
Thanks all! The paperback is now up (link in sig). It's also through Amazon; which handily meant I was able to enroll in the current Kindle Storyteller Award. I don't know how far I'll get but part of the first round is based on performance during the entry period, so if you happen to spread the word, it could help out a lot :)
The cover art is pretty darn great. I'm very happy how it turned out, working with the artist, and had nothing but a positive experience on that front. I was actually looking forward to showing off how that came out, but for multiple reasons this seemed to be the best way.
In totally other news, though admittedly more fitted for AF&S, has anyone else been surprised (and/or pleased) by the number of oldschool callbacks in the MH1 spoilers?
It tells me someone in the wizard offices still gets what a fair few of us got into the game for.
Something of a shame there sends to be a disconnect between the standard team and the others.
I meant to come around this weekend, but then I lost power for about 20 hours over Saturday/Sunday. So, there's that.
Thank you all for the birthday wishes! :)
I don't normally want to ymtc. Nothing wrong with it, it can certainly be fun, but usually I just use my creative juices differently.
That said, I very much want to design a Super Mario set.
Behind the throne there's more room to maneuver, as someone wise said.
