I’d go Apathy. Eutropia is good and I would snag her if I first picked a green or blue card, but you’re prob not playing her in the same deck as Drag. I wouldn’t give up a premium removal first pick for a second pick off colors gold card that isn’t Dream Trawler or Ashiok.

However, I think Eutropia is more fun and could totally see myself taking her as a speculative pick if my mood was right.

pretty much that

Yeah that sounds reasonable. For some reason I was thinking, if I pick Eutropia, I have three colors = I can pick cards from three colors = more versatile than picking Dreadful Apathy. Of course that makes no sense.

(Although I did end up in a deck that has perhaps too much removal: 3 Drag to the Underworld, 2 Dreadful Apathy, Warbriar Blessing, Banishing Light, and Final Death!)

Yes, you still need to win. I remember some decks that controlled everything and would then die to natural self-decking. Hopefully you got something better than our favorite 2/2 flier for 5 ;)

Theros drafts have not been treating me well recently - after almost never going worse than 50%, even when I was new, I've been sub 50% several times in my last few games. Sometimes it's not my fault (opponent T6 Dream Trawler), sometimes I was just unlucky (color screw and all that), but I'm sure a lot of the time I just played/drafted badly and lost. Many of my decks simply had too many filler cards like Soulreaper of Mogis when I had nothing to sacrifice.

Back on topic though ...

What would you guys pick? I don't have any auras yet, but Pilgrim is one of the best commons in White colors.

Alirios, Enraptured - can't go wrong with 5/5 for 3 over 2 bodies ;)

Location: Anyway the wind blows
Identity: doesnt really matter
Preferred Pronoun Set: to me
Pilgrim is worth speculating on, as you have 2 packs to get auras still. However, with dream trawler, you have a bomb worth building a survivability plan for - in that light, I’m inclined to agree with Sol and pick up the 3/2-2/3 two-bodies card.

I'd pick Alirios as well; my second pick would actually be the Alseid for the on-board trick making combat a nightmare for opponents.

Took Alirios and the deck went 7-2!

1 x Stern Dismissal

1 x Leonin of the Lost Pride
1 x Riptide Turtle
2 x Flicker of Fate
1 x Omen of the Sea
1 x Medomai's Prophecy
1 x The Birth of Meletis
1 x Revoke Existence

2 x Alirios, Enraptured
1 x Naiad of Hidden Coves
1 x Vexing Gull
1 x Thirst for Meaning
1 x Omen of the Sun
1 x Deny the Divine

1 x Sunmane Pegasus
1 x Triumphant Surge
2 x Lagona-Band Storyteller

1 x Witness of Tomorrows

1 x Dream Trawler
1 x Brine Giant

9 x Plains
8 x Island

Cards in sideboard not used: Heliod's Pilgrim + Sentinel's Eyes, 3rd Flicker of Fate, 2nd Thirst for Meaning, 2nd Triumphant Surge, Centaur Courser, Glory Bearers, Eidolon of Philosophy, Nyxborn Seaguard

I'm not sure if the build was right. I originally had 1 Flicker 2 Thirst, but since I didn't have many enchantments I switched to 2nd Flicker 1 Thirst with the hope that I might be able to flicker one of the sagas. That never came up, but Flickering Alirios was pretty good too.

I won 100% of the games in which I drew Dream Trawler. No surprises there. But even without drawing Dream Trawler this might've been the sweetest deck I've played, since the sagas providing some fun decision points. Storyteller recurring the sagas was great value, and it's not an easy decision as to whether to recur Medomai's Prophecy late in the game (since it's effectively asking me to predict the board three turns down the line). The lifegain also meant I had more math than usual to do in races.

I lost two games, one to an opponent who went Renata into Nessian Boar which tempo'ed me out since I didn't have removal at the time. The other opponent had another excellent deck: Thryx, Hippocamp, and Kiora Bests the Sea God.

Next draft, after P1P1 Final Death, should I take Acolyte of Affliction, Warbriar Blessing, or Anax?

Took the Anax because I'd never played with it before, wound up with a very good B/R sacrifice deck:

1 x Mogi's Favor
1 x Shadowspear
1 x Infuriate

1 x Lampad of Death's Vigil
2 x Slaughter-Priest of Mogis
1 x Underworld Rage-Hound
2 x Incendiary Oracle
1 x Tymaret, Chosen from Death
1 x Mire Triton

1 x Fateful End
2 x Anax, Hardened in the Forge
1 x Hero of the Games
1 x Phoenix of Ash

3 x Portent of Betrayal
1 x Skophos Maze-Warden

1 x Rage-Scarred Berserker
1 x Final Death

1 x Blight-Breath Catoblepas

8 x Swamp
9 x Mountain

Cards in sideboard not used: Dreamstalker Manticore (it was this or Hero, I chose Hero because I did have a couple of ways to target it, plus Anax tokens), 2nd Hero of the Games, 4th Portent, Oread of Mountain's Blaze, Wings of Hubris, Aspect of Manticore

In my original draft I had 16 lands, but then I decided I needed more, since Portent is effectively a 6-mana card if I had Slaughter Priest out. The "synergy" between the two actually turned out to be pretty bad, since the +2/+0 effect from Slaughter Priest is largely irrelevant if I'm attacking with the stolen creature. Infuriate was the card I was least sure of. Turns out I never used it anyway, although at the end of one game I kept it on top with the Portent scry because I was so near lethal. Didn't need it though. Otherwise the deck was just really good. It could probably have used one more Lampad, though (to make the Portents more effective). Never drew Catoblepas, and never triggered Hero; on the other hand I also never cast spells on opponent's turn so Manticore might not have been better.

The run itself was pretty poor early on since I ran over someone with Nyx Lotus ... but! I decided to post this anyway because I beat a freaking T6 DREAM TRAWLER. Hah. Opponent had Pious Wayfarer with Sentinel's Eyes, which I removed with Fateful End. Then he played Heliod's Pilgrim getting another Sentinel's Eyes and I was looking forward to an easy win since Sentinel's Eyes is not a particularly strong aura. He even passed turn 5 without doing anything while I played Berserker and pounded him. Then on turn 6 he played Dream Trawler. I attacked, forced the Pilgrim to chump, and sacrificed the creature blocked by Dream Trawler. Next turn he played Sentinel's Eyes on the Dream Trawler and attacked, but didn't have anything else to add to the board. On my turn I repeated the sacrifice-creature-blocked-by-Trawler trick and killed him. Very satisfying because that card is just busted.

Only loss was against a GW deck with lots of enchantments, Archon of Sun's Grace, and I stalled on 3 lands. Might've been able to come back if I drew two more lands since I had Portent + Lampad, I still might've been able to stabilize if he didn't have Pegasus, but as it was I had no chance.

Last match of the run I actually played against someone who's platinum. Wow, that takes quite a bit of grind.

Next draft is starting with Archon :)

One last 7-win Theros draft before I possibly quit MTGA to play Mythgard :)

1 x Karametra's Blessing
2 x Mogi's Favor

1 x Mire's Grasp
2 x Flicker of Fate
1 x Leonin of the Lost Pride
1 x Mire Triton
1 x Temple Thief
2 x Flicker of Fate
1 x The Birth of Meletis
1 x Tymaret, Chosen from Death

1 x Dawn Evangel
1 x Heliod's Pilgrim
1 x Dawn Evangel
1 x Altar of the Pantheon
1 x Underworld Charger
1 x Banishing Light

1 x Sunmane Pegasus
1 x Nightmare Shephard
1 x Eat to Extinction
1 x Nyxborn Marauder

1 x Gray Merchant of Asphodel
1 x Daybreak Chimera

1 x Blight-Breath Catoblepas

8 x Swamp
8 x Plains

Cards in sideboard not used: Nyxborn Courser, Glory Bringers, 2 Triumphant Surge, Soulreaper of Mogis, 2nd Altar of the Pantheon, Cling to Dust

I'm not completely sure the build is right, it's possible I wanted the white creatures because of the devotion payoff, but the deck went 7-1, can't complain. 2x Flicker might have been too much but I did have some strong ETBs, however. 2x Mogi's Favor might also be incorrect; however I figured that with Heliod's Pilgrim in my deck I'd better run three auras. The deck could really have used more auras regardless; only being able to fetch two gives up flexibility. I ran Altar because of the devotion payoffs, cutting a land for it. I think it was the right call although I still flooded out one game.

There were several cards I never drew (Leonin, Banishing Light [although this did get milled by Mire Triton], Flicker even in spite of 2 copies). Nightmare Shepard also turned out to be "just" a 4-mana 4/4 flyer, which is nonetheless still a bomb. A sweet play was eating through opponent's graveyard with Tymaret to prevent the ECD 3rd chapter. Altar tapping for 1 life with Tymaret in play never happened, sadly. Maximum drain with Gray Merchant was 8!

With that, bye Magic, at least till next set!
