I heard it’s the best DLC at least

I’ll take it a step further. It’s probably the best rpg to come out in years, possibly ever. I just don’t like it.

Nah, that goes to the Baldur's Gate series.

I love this. It's exactly what I said about Skyrim. "good heavens if this isn't the best RPG to come out in years...... I still don't like playing it"

and that's weird for me cuz i LOVED Oblivion. i played that to death

That’s because Morrowind >> Oblivion >>>>>>>> Skyrim

Even though Skyrim is a beautiful game.

I love Skyrim, but I can totally understand why people would think it was subpar, especially relative to earlier Bethesda games.

Both Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2 had the same effect on me. I was aware I was playing an incredible game but I just didn’t want to play it anymore after not too long

Whereas Oblivion, GTA 4 & 5 kept me for hundreds of hours (only 130 with Oblivion but still)

I’m not a big fan of rdr2, but the online version gets my thumbs up. Worth checking out if you own the game.

I think my favorite RPG recently was Pillars of Eternity. Before that it was Dragon's Age. For some reason, I could never get into the Bethesda games, and I have yet to try Witcher.

Yeah I really hated the Dragon Age stuff but absolutely devoured the Mass Effect trilogy. That’s my vote for best RPG ever

I grew up playing SSI’s RPGs on PC: Pool of Radiance and such. You’d need graph paper to map out the areas, it was glorious

Pool of Radiance was the gold standard. I remember when Hillsdale came out and being slightly disappointed because it was not the glory of Pool. Later on I played Temple of Elemental Evil and used one of my characters in teh game as my character in a Pen and paper game since they had a history already and levels needed.

Generally I find that I enjoy games that has some sort of good building and/or development system. Conan Exiles I loved. I wasn't a raider, but I like building stuff that was tough to raid. Playing surviving Mars now. Xcom was great as you developed your squad.

I should try Witcher etc though. I just seem to have a short attention span for many of those games. Fallout probably kept my attention the longest lately, and even then, it was developing the character and settlement more then the story.

Speaking of that, in movies and books, story is very important to me, however, moments are just as important and will probably sick with you longer.

The Witcher 3 is basically Elder Scrolls with better combat and a better story. But the story and amount of detail is really really good.

It’s basically an open world “sandbox” in which you feverishly try to do everything and the game looks real pretty; but you are playing a game that is extremely wide and not very deep in the gameplay department. This is in contrast to more linear rpgs with much greater depth of character customization but less of an open world and much fewer in depth side stories.

The Witcher 3 in particular is also definitely for mature gamers only, which can be refreshing considering the rest of the market. And the story is VERY good.

Here’s a good question for any MTG fans who don’t care about yugioh: Is Pot of Greed or Graceful Charity better?

Dj I wanted to ask ur opinion on this one.

I know nothing about Yugioh, but I'd say it depends on the type of deck. The first would be generally better (basic 2 for 1, and if that symbol is the cost it should be pretty great), but if you have a deck that needs to find certain specific cards to function better, then the latter could be superior (although, I would expect it to be good only in corner case decks. Main question: why not just increase the number of good cards in the deck instead, which is the argument people use against cards like that in mtg). Again, I know nothing about that game - for example how spell timing works, how resources work, what happens when I run out of cards, etc...

The cards in question function like zero mana spells in MTG. They cost no resources.

Being unable to draw has the same result as MTG, except you have a 40 card deck with no lands.

Most decks in Yugioh use the graveyard as a second hand.

Any more thoughts?

story is only important for books. I've come to realize that with great movies, you never remember the story but rather you remember moments (Scorsese said that too). Like last night I watched ROMA and there were two moments that'll stick with me. Two of my favourite movies were Gravity and Mad Max Fury Road which didn't really have stories.

so yeah, story is overrated.

Books need story
video game needs gameplay, and moments
movies and tv shows just need moments really

Story isn’t as important in video games as books, but it’s not irrelevant in the medium. I still have fond memories of Telltale’s Walking Dead season 1, and that was close to 10 years ago. That’s essentially an interactive story. From a pure gameplay perspective it’s pretty garbage - some clunky walking around in closed locations and minimal interacting with the environment, along with some quick time events (and I effin hate quick time events) - but the story was great.

I mean fun gameplay without any story can be great in video games - Tecmo Super Bowl is one of my all time favorite games and there’s 0 storytelling to that game, but a game can be good or improved by storytelling.

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the greatest RPGs ever. I kept my PS1 until it died just for that game

Yeah TWD season 1 was fantastic. the last time Lee is with Clementine still stays with me. That was brilliant.
Or when you realized everyone at the farm was eating people

Again tho, I think that’s more moments than story. The story is pretty linear

Unless it’s a Choose Your Own Adventure kids book with their dozen endings, books are linear stories in the same way. I’m not getting what you mean by moments. Books I can think of that I enjoyed stand out in my head largely due to key moments in the story.
